The Super Lawyer selection process involves three steps to ensure only the most experienced and accomplished lawyers are nominated. The final list is published in Super Lawyers Magazines and other city, state and regional legal newspapers and magazines. These steps include:

Step 1: Peer Nominations

The Super Lawyers annual process begins with nominations from other practicing lawyers in their state who they have personally worked with and observed. Lawyers nominate those they feel are top lawyers in their practice area who have gone above and beyond. Lawyers are not allowed to vote for themselves and a point system is used.

This point system gives a higher value to nominations from outside the lawyer’s firm. Third party nominations are also taken into consideration such as those from readers, clients and attorneys outside of the nominee’s state, but third party votes are not given points.

The Super Lawyers research department has protocols in place to make sure lawyers do not trade or block nominations. Lawyers are prohibited from soliciting or campaigning for votes. Lawyers who are voted by their peers do not necessarily win the Super Lawyers title.

Step 2: Candidate Evaluation

The Super Lawyers staff uses 12 criteria to identify lawyers who have been acknowledged with professional excellence. This process sometimes uncovers lawyers who may have been overlooked. Some of these markers are given a higher point value than others.

The measures taken into consideration include:

  1. Settlements and verdicts
  2. Experience
  3. Awards and other honors
  4. Special certifications and licenses in specific practice areas
  5. Representative clients
  6. Transactions
  7. Law firm position
  8. Professional activities and/or bar associations
  9. Scholarly writings and lectures
  10. Pro bono or community service
  11. Employment and education
  12. Additional remarkable achievements

Step 3: The Blue Ribbon Review

Once the list of potential Super Lawyers has been compiled, the “blue ribbon review,” begins. All candidates are grouped by primary practice area. The blue ribbon panel is then created with the candidates who have the highest total points. These lawyers evaluate and review those nominated in their practice area giving them a 1 to 10 rating.

The finalists are separated into four categories according to firm size, which makes sure individual, small and large firm lawyers are compared to those in similar firms. The Super Lawyers awards are given to candidates with the highest totaled points, and no more than five percent of practicing lawyers in each state are officially selected.

The research department does one finally check with licensing authorities and internet searches to make sure each lawyer has not been involved in criminal proceedings or disciplinary actions.

Super Lawyer Rising Stars

The Super Lawyers establishment also recognizes hard working and upcoming lawyers who are 40 years old or younger or who have been actively practicing law for 10 or fewer years. Only 2.5 percent of lawyers per state are named Rising Stars.

Clark, Clark & Noonan, LLC. is honored that our lawyer, Michael Noonan, has been named a New Jersey Super Lawyer. To learn more about the selection process visit the Super Lawyers site.
