About the Charges

Aggravated manslaughter by eluding is a serious, first-degree crime in New Jersey. If you kill someone while eluding a police officer (or attempting to elude) you can be charged with aggravated manslaughter by eluding as well as other crimes depending on individual circumstances (see inset on right.)

If you are convicted of first-degree aggravated manslaughter by eluding you can receive a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years as well as be required to pay a fine up to $200,000 and restitution to help cover funeral other possibly other expenses.

You can also be charged with Second-Degree Eluding, 2nd Degree Vehicular Manslaughter (in addition to aggravated manslaughter by eluding.) If you are convicted of any additional Second Degree crimes you can be sentenced to prison for an additional five to ten years and fined up to $150,000 per conviction.

For eluding, you can also face charges of resisting arrest, a crime that carries additional fines and penalties.
