A motorist crashed into a utility pole on Monday morning, January 2, 2017, after another individual fired multiple shots at the vehicle they were driving; several bullets struck the vehicle. The driver was not struck by any of the bullets, and the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Some of the charges the individual who fired the multiple gunshots at the motor vehicle could face include:

  • Attempted Murder: The crime of attempted murder occurs when an individual has the specific intent to commit homicide but is unsuccessful in doing so. A conviction for attempted murder can land a person in jail for many years.
  • Possession of a Weapon For an Unlawful Purpose: The crime of unlawful possession of a weapon occurs when an individual possesses a weapon with an unlawful purpose.

A key element to possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose is that the individual manifests the unlawful purpose when they are in possession of the weapon. This means that an individual can still be guilty of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose even if they are legally permitted to carry a weapon. In other words, just because someone legally possesses a weapon does not mean they have the lawful authority to use that weapon in an unlawful or illegal manner that causes injury to a person or property. A conviction for unlawful possession of a weapon can lead to serious penalties.
