New Jersey statute 2C:17-6 makes it a crime in the state of New Jersey for an individual to deface, remove, alter, destroy, change, or obliterate any distinguishing identification number, serial number or other marking on a motor vehicle for an unlawful purpose.
If an individual does commit the aforementioned act, they will be guilty of a crime of the third degree, and as such, may face between three and five years in a New Jersey state prison.
Additionally, an individual who knowingly possesses a motor vehicle, or any other part which has had an identification number, serial number or other marking removed, altered, destroyed, changed or covered, for an unlawful purpose, will be guilty of an offense.
The severity of the degree of that offense may vary if:
- The value of the parts and/or the motor vehicle is valued between two hundred dollars but less than four hundred dollars, the individual will be guilty of a fourth-degree crime which means that the individual may face up to eighteen months in a New Jersey state prison.
- The value of the parts are less than two hundred dollars, the individual will be guilty of a disorderly persons offense which means the individual may face up to six months in the county jail.
- The value of the parts are in excess of five hundred dollars, the individual will be guilty of a crime of the third degree and may face up to five years in a New Jersey state prison.
